Question: What are your objectives for 2009?
Answer: The most important thing is that I continue to improve and learn from each experience. I really want to become more consistent this year, because last year I had some great results and some that were not so good. I am not thinking too much about rankings, but qualifying for the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha is very important and I also believe that I can win another Grand Slam too.
Q. The 8th of June 2008 you rised the first position in the WTA ranking, how did you feel that day?
A. It was an amazing experience. Winning the French Open was probably the happiest day of my life and I felt like I was in a dream for almost a week afterwards: it took some time to sink in. I actually found out about the No.1 ranking after my semi-final match in Paris, because a lady in the locker room told me about it. I have worked very hard and to achieve probably the biggest goal in my life was a very emotional moment for me.
Q. How do you think you can reach the first place again?
A. For sure I can be No.1 again. I am concentrating on improving my tennis instead of rankings, because if you improve your game the results and rankings come automatically. I am only 21 years old and there are many areas for me to improve in, so I definitely feel that I can be No.1 again.
Q. You are considered one of the sexiest tennis players in the world, how do you feel about it?
A. It’s a really nice compliment to hear. All women like to receive compliments about how they look and I am no different. But I am a tennis player – people know me for how I play tennis – and how I look has nothing to do with my tennis.
Q. From all the tournaments you´ve played, in which one do you feel more comfortable?
A. I love Paris and the French Open. Australia is my favourite country and I love the Australian Open too, especially because it’s in Melbourne, where I have some family. We play quite a lot of tournaments in America and Indian Wells is definitely my favourite there. It’s very relaxing. But we’re lucky because most tournaments are run very well and I am made to feel very welcome and comfortable at most events.
Q. In September of 2007 you were ippointed goodwill ambassador by UNICEF. What are your aims in this post?
A. It was a great honour to be invited to serve as a UNICEF ambassador. I love spending time with kids, so for me it’s a pleasure to work with them and help them in some small way. I understand that children often look up to us as athletes and I try to set the best example that I can.
I am concerned mainly with the “School Without Violence” programme, where we are trying to increase awareness about children’s safety in school and reduce the amount of violence that they experience.
Q. What are your expectations for the new tournament from Madrid, the Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open?
A. I try not to have too many expectations in a tournament or to put press on myself, but I always feel like I have the potential to win it. I love Spain – actually I just bought a house there – and I am sure I am going to enjoy playing in Madrid again. I visited the Caja Mágica when it was being built and I’m excited to play in the new stadium.
