American Sloane Stephens, the No. 17 seed, knocked out another former champion, 2008 winner and No. 11 seed Ana Ivanovic, in the night session. She prevailed 7-6(3), 6-4 for her fourth win against a Top 15 opponent (4-23 overall).
"I thought I played solid," said Stephens. "It wasn't my best tennis, but at times it was really good. It was a little up and down.
Mentally I stayed tough, but that's what really mattered in the end."
